Wedding Dress Shopping – Where to Start

Make Time

Finding your picture-perfect wedding dress takes a lot of time and patience, so it is never too early to start looking.

Firstly, don’t rush – it may take a while and a number of visits to different stores until you find your ideal dress, but to ensure your valuable shopping-time is not put to waste, book an appointment with the store in advance so you are not left waiting around for assistance.

Don’t leave it until last minute; once you have chosen your ideal gown the store will have to order the dress in from another source – a process which can take several months. On top of this you will most likely have to undergo a number of alterations to ensure that your dress is exactly what you envisioned and fits you perfectly, which again can take up to several weeks.

Be Prepared

There are a huge amount of options to choose from when it comes to bridal shopping, but by doing your research and narrowing down your style choices – finding your perfect dress will be that much easier.

Do your homework. There are hundreds of wedding magazines, books, websites and blogs out there to help guide you towards choosing your style of dress. Keep photos of brides and gowns that you like the look of and take note of things such as, which neckline, sleeve style, waistline, length of train, colour, fabric you prefer etc. and take all your pictures and notes with you when you go shopping.

Additionally, if you have any items such as a head piece, item of jewellery, shoes or any other accessories that you would like to incorporate into your outfit on your big day, don’t forget to take them with you when you’re choosing your dress to ensure that everything ties together beautifully.

Set a budget. Once you’ve got an idea of what you would like your dress to look like, set yourself a budget and avoid disappointment by telling the sales consultant before you try anything on.

Don’t be Discouraged

The dress you have in mind may take a while to find but remember that things can be adapted, added and altered in order to create exactly what you envision.

Keep an open mind. More often than most a bride will end up choosing a dress that differs completely from what she was originally looking for, this is because bridal dresses usually look completely different on the hanger to what they do on the bride. So don’t be disappointed if the dress you had in mind doesn’t look quite how you expected, be sure to try different styles and materials and you could be pleasantly surprised!

Focus on the fit, not the size. Bridal dresses are deceiving as the sizes usually appear smaller than they do with normal wear, so don’t be disheartened if you find yourself measured for a larger size than normal. Additionally, many brides plan to lose weight before their big day, but don’t make the mistake of buying a dress a size too small and aim to fit into it – go by what fits you now and get it altered closer to the time. It is a lot easier to make a dress smaller than it is to make it larger!

Both Ribbons and Pearls based in Cookham, Berkshire and Encore Bridal and Evenings located in Englefield Green, Surrey/Berkshire are home to a fantastic array of bridal dresses from top designers such as Phoenix, Victoria Kay, Dynasty, D’Zage, Amanda Wyatt and many more.
